Since it was introduced in 1994 as the horological flagship of the historic Saxon manufactory, the LANGE 1 has ranked among the watch market’s most exalted models The LANGE 1 is undoubtedly the No. 1 watch for the Saxon manufactory and for Lange’s global clientele. After all, it seems that no other debuting watch has ever received more awards in the past years than this flagship conceived in Glashütte. It builds a convincing bridge to the grand tradition of Germany’s precision watchmaking industry that was established in the Ore Mountains by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in 1845. But the LANGE 1 also instantly lent credibility to the statement by Walter Lange: “We’re going to make the best watches in the world – yet again!” This ambition was expressed on the occasion of the manufactory’s renewed incorporation in 1990, following an involuntary hiatus of more than 50 years. The Saxon watchmakers adopted the statement as their creed. And the vision became true, as evidenced by the many prizes and awards conferred upon the LANGE 1 in Germany and abroad, among others its multiple rankings as “Watch of the Year” in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Japan.



This exceptional watch embodies the unbridled imagination and dedication of a highly motivated team which knew all too well in 1990 that it would only have one single chance to revive the heritage of “A. Lange & Söhne”. The Glashütte staff literally had to create the then no longer existing market for “luxury watches from Germany”. But fortunately, collectors and connoisseurs had been waiting on the sidelines. And so the legend was brought back to life, with exceptional quality features such as the traditional Glashütte three-quarter plate made of German silver, screw-mounted gold chatons which are rarely seen even in the most luxurious of watches, the twin mainspring barrel for a power reserve of more than three days, and the complex whiplash precision index adjuster with patented adjustment devices. When the LANGE 1 was unveiled, it also showcased a world premiere: The patented outsize date with a correctly switching month transition and numerals that were three times more easily legible than the dates of conventional watches of comparable dimensions.



With its unusual design, the clear, asymmetrically juxtaposed displays, and its technical innovations, the LANGE 1 set out to rival stylistically stereotyped timepieces, and precisely that forged its great success. It was the first Lange watch of the new era that simultaneously defined an unmistakable and compelling standard of Saxon horological prowess. For all these reasons, the LANGE 1 is a centennial opus, certainly from the manufactory’s point of view as well.

The powerful momentum behind this watchmaking renaissance is expressed by the prudently refined versions of this watch which is always crafted exclusively from platinum or gold. Apart from the classics in yellow gold, a discerning international clientele with differentiated stylistic expectations has been increasingly attracted to versions in platinum, pink gold, and white gold with dials of different colours. The line of original models with their case diameter of 38.5 millimetres has been enriched with versions that have somewhat smaller cases and – most recently – with the GRAND LANGE 1, a more prominently cased model. The LANGE 1 TOURBILLON, long sold out, was presented as a limited edition of the LANGE 1 with a tourbillon harmoniously integrated in the dial. The next progression in complications was the addition of a moon-phase display in the subsidiary seconds dial – the LANGE 1 MOONPHASE was born. And the latest creation, the LANGE 1 “Luminous”, proves that the inimitable form language of this timepiece retains its mystique even as its design is dynamically evolved.
